
Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter of Josephine Ormond, a laboratory technician , as is John Ormond. She is the second child of five children to her parents. Her first performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady attracted attention. She went on to Cranleigh School and Guildford High School. After a single year of art school, she was transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Her graduation was in 1988. Ormond first made an appearance in British TV in the drama Traffik The story revolves around the illegal heroin trade from the Far East into the streets of Europe. Ormond was the heroin-addicted daughter of the main character a Home Office minister who was involved in battling heroin imports. This role received glowing reviews from the very beginning.
